Dome Cameras

As mentioned before, domes and fixed type security camera are probably the most commonly used styles in video surveillance. Just venture into a large store and you will see these large, smoked glass covered, dome cameras in full view. The smoked glass/plastic cover is used as a camouflage of sorts; so one doesn't know exactly what direction the camera is pointing. The smaller 4 to 5 inch diameter models usually have one camera under the dome while the larger 12 inch diameter models could have multiple cameras covering different angles.

Like bullets cameras, dome cameras come complete with a lens. Unlike bullets cameras though, most professional dome cameras have a variable focal lens option. Variable focus means you can zoom it in for a tighter view or out for a wider view of the area you want to cover.

Dome cameras are manufactured in indoor and outdoor models. Dome cameras that don't specify they can be used outdoors, should only be used indoors. The outdoor models have weather proofing that enable them to be mounted outdoors without an additional protective covering; unlike most fixed cameras which need additional housing to protect it from the elements.

Domes also come in "ruggedized" models. Some of these models are built to withstand a direct hit from a hammer. These models are especially useful in areas where vandalism to the camera may occur.

Outdoor domes in the 4 or inch diameter variety would work nicely in a residential install as they can be installed under eaves; especially if you have a two story residence and the eaves are 20 feet off the ground. They probably would go unnoticed by the casual passer by. Indoor domes are normally mounted on the ceiling.
